Jennie Lake’s Healing

Two years after John G. Lake married, his wife, Jennie, was diagnosed with tuberculosis and heart disease. She was given increasingly stronger doses of medication but her condition continued to worsen and in 1898, the doctors told him there was nothing more that could be done for her.

When Jennie’s final hours seemed to be approaching, a fellow minister encouraged Lake to resolve himself to God’s will and to accept Jennie’s death. In utter hopelessness, Lake threw his Bible against the fireplace mantle and it fell to the floor and opened to Acts chapter 10. As he walked over to pick it up, his eyes drifted to verse 38: “…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed by the devil; for God was with him.”

Those powerful words ripped through his thoughts, “oppressed by the devil!” That meant that God was not the author of Jennie’s sickness, or any sickness. And if Lake was a son of God through Jesus Christ, then God was with him, just as He was with Jesus. Now he was convinced it was the devil that had caused Jennie’s illness. It was the devil who was trying to steal the mother of his children. It was the devil who was trying to destroy his life!

Then Lake turned to Luke 13:16 and read: “So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” Lake realized that not only was Satan the author of sickness and death, but that Jesus Christ—through him—could bring healing and deliverance to the afflicted! Through using him, Jesus Christ could conquer the throes of death! There was no doubt in his mind that Jesus died for the healing of his wife, lust as He died for her sins. And he determined that absolutely nothing would rob Jennie of that gift.

In boldness that only the Holy Spirit could have produced, Lake decided to let God, not Satan, have the last say. He marched into the bedroom and declared to the seen and unseen that his wife would be healed at exactly 9:30 a.m.! When 9:30 arrived, Lake knelt at his wife’s side and called on the Living God. When he did, the power of God came upon Jennie and permeated her body from head to foot and she was instantly healed. Soon the story of Jennie’s healing became national news inspiring many to travel great distances to visit the Lakes’ home.

The following excerpt is taken from John G. Lake: His Life, His Sermons, His Boldness of Faith by John G. Lake:

Ministry of the Spirit

You see, the spirit of man must contact and know the real Spirit of God, know God. We do not know God with our flesh, with our hands, nor with our brains. We know God with our spirit….

No one must be the recipient of the light, glory and power of God before he or she can manifest it. Jesus demonstrated these two facts: the marvelous capacity of the nature of man to receive God into his being, and the marvelous capacity of the nature of man to reveal God. In the glory shining through His clothes, in the glistening of the glory of God that made His face glorious and wonderful, He demonstrated man’s capacity to reveal God.

The ministry of the Christian is the ministry of the SPIRIT. He not only ministers words to another but he ministers the Spirit of God. It is the Spirit of God that inhabits the words, that speaks to the spirit of another and reveals Christ in and through him.

The ministry of the Christian is the ministry of the Spirit. If the Christian cannot minister the Spirit of God, in the true sense he is not a Christian. If he has not the Spirit to minister in the real high sense, he has nothing to minister. Other men have intellectuality, but the Christian is supposed to be the possessor of the Spirit. There should never be any misunderstanding along these lines in the minds of any.

Continued Praying…

We come up in Your presence, Lord
Your mercy unfolds before us
All we have to do is yield
Lord, You empower us with Your power
You change us into Your image
We have ears to hear what Your Spirit is saying
You are leading and guiding us
There is such truth in You
Father, you are teaching us how to walk through to the end
Our plan is to go right to the throne
To You we come, to You we bow!
Father, You are not just words on a page, but You are real and alive!
Make every word burn in our hearts
In Your Spirit, there is great understanding and revelation
Symptoms of sickness have to leave!
