The following commentary to Exodus 24:16–17 is taken from The Revival Study Bible:

No Fire, No Glory
Exodus 24:16–17

To the Israelites, the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. When the glory of God is present, people know it. There is no more need to announce the presence of God’s glory than there is need to announce the presence of fire. God’s glory is something tangible. Everyone feels it; everyone sees it; everyone experiences it. In fact, the glory of God is the visible manifestation of God either by a distinct outward form (like the pillar of cloud) or by a supernatural; outward demonstration (like the raising of Lazarus from the dead or a miraculous healing). What has become of the glory?

Because our nation has experienced precious little revival in the last two generations, we have “changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man” (Rom 1:23). We have cheapened it, trivialized it, and made it something light—the Hebrew for “glory” means “heavy”! We have had plenty of smoke (we can really talk it up!) but very little fire.

How will we know when the glory appears? How can we see the glory of God? “Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud” (Ex 16:10). “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” (John 11:40). These are the words of Jesus! Believe His Word. Then you will see. Show us Your glory, oh, God! (See Ex 33:18).
